Indiana Youth Advisory Board

The Indiana Youth Advisory Board (IYAB) consists of six regional boards made up of current and former foster youth from six regions within the State of Indiana, designed to provide leadership and self-advocacy training and hope for the future.

IYAB’s purpose is to empower Indiana’s foster youth to advocate for themselves and communicate their needs and concerns effectively through increased awareness of their rights and responsibilities and increased access to the resources they need to make successful transitions. To achieve those ends, IYAB members participate in conferences, training sessions, and other activities throughout the year.

Involvement on the Board offers members unique opportunities to take leadership roles in the enlightenment of Department of Child Services (DCS) employees on youth experience and perspective within the foster care system.

IYAB is a safe space for youth to talk about the issues that affect them. Therefore, there are no adult workers present at the IYAB meeting. All meetings are facilitated by older youth who are transitioning out of foster care.

For those attending in person, pizza and drinks will be provided. To earn your stipend, you must attend the meeting and be an active participant! And, for those attending virtually, you must have your camera on and actively participate in the meeting to earn your stipend.

To attend an IYAB meeting you must be aged 14-23 and are currently or formerly in foster care. We ask that you register for the meeting. You DO NOT have to complete an application to attend a meeting, but to become a member of IYAB an application must be completed. Be sure to select either in-person or virtual when you register! This will help us to ensure we have enough space, stipends, and food for each meeting!
